This two-volume edition of the Catholic Vulgate contains over 200 illustrations by the renowned French artist Gustave Doré (1832–1883). Doré rose to fame early in his life creating wood engravings to illustrate works of history and literature. He is perhaps best remembered today, however, for his Bible engravings. The Annunciation and the adoration of the shepherds after Jesus’s birth are among the many scenes depicted in this Bible, demonstrating Doré’s attention to detail and use of shading to convey emotion. Illustrated Bibles such as this edition were popular in the late 1800s, serving as family Bibles and devotional aids.

Printed in 1870 for Edward Hallberger, Stuttgart, Germany. Acquired before 2010 by Art Bibliophilie Curiosa, bookseller, Zurich, Switzerland; Purchased in 2010 by Green Collection, Oklahoma City, Oklahoma; Donated in 2022 to The Signatry under the curatorial care of Museum of the Bible, Washington, DC.
