These United States Army discharge papers were for Private Robert Lee Carter of the 7th Infantry based at Camp Lewis in Washington. Carter enlisted on January 19, 1921, and served one year. While serving, he received an Army and Navy New Testament. He received an honorable discharge, in which it states Private Carter’s service was “honest and faithful.” Discharge papers were kept in an accompanying black tri-fold leather-like folder.

Created in 1922 by the United States Army; Ownership assumed in 1922 by Robert Lee Carter (d. 1977), Camp Lewis, Washington;[1] By widowhood in 1977 to Lelia Huckaby Carter (d. 1989); By descent in 1989 to Nora Carter Shephard, daughter of Lelia and Robert Lee Carter; Gifted in 2018 to Perry L. Vanoy, Louisiana; Donated in 2018 to Museum of the Bible, Washington, DC.

Notes: [1] Carter was honorably discharged on January 18, 1922.
