Charles Ernest Scott and his wife, Clara, were Presbyterian missionaries in the early 1900s to Shandong, China. Their daughter Betty later returned to China as a missionary and married John Stam in 1933. In December 1934, the Stams were captured and Betty and John were executed—their daughter, Helen, escaped. This typed letter was written by Betty’s father in 1934 and reflects on his time in “the country” during the Easter season, stating that he is “rejoicing in the Easter Message of Love, Hope, Joy, Peace, and supernatural Power proving His Diety [sic].” Below the typed letter, a handwritten question regarding this document is asked by Scott. It is answered in another hand that it was “never received or sent out.”

Created in 1934 by Charles E. Scott, China. Acquired by 2010 by Gene Albert (Christian Heritage Museum), Hagerstown, Maryland; Privately purchased in 2010 by Green Collection, Oklahoma City, Oklahoma; Donated in 2019 to The Signatry, under the curatorial care of Museum of the Bible, Washington, DC.
