The American Bible Society (ABS) was founded in 1819 with the goal to ensure every home had a Bible. ABS printed and distributed low-cost Bibles in multiple languages, including many Native American languages. Thompson S. Harris translated the Gospel of Luke into the Seneca tongue with the English translation on the opposite page. This Bible is one of the 1,000 copies printed in 1829. Harris was a missionary to the Seneca in the 1800s, and he went on to translate the Gospel of Matthew into the Seneca language.
Printed in 1829 by the American Bible Society, New York. Acquired by the Christian Heritage Museum, Hagerstown, Maryland; Privately purchased in 2010 by Green Collection, Oklahoma City, Oklahoma; Donated in 2017 to National Christian Foundation (later The Signatry) under the curatorial care of Museum of the Bible, Washington, DC.
