This edition of the Gospel of Matthew was translated into Mohawk by Henry Aaron Hill, an American Indian missionary, catechist, and translator who worked among the Mohawk people of Upper Canada and northern New York State. Hill’s translation was one of many Mohawk translations of biblical books and other religious works to appear in the first decades of the nineteenth century by Christian missionaries such as William Hess and Thompson S. Harris. This text was published on behalf of the Young Men’s Bible Society of New York, an arm of the Bible Society of the Methodist Episcopal Church.
