Mary Baker Eddy was the founder of Christian Science and the associated Church of Christ, Scientist. Eddy doubted the existence of physical matter, insisting instead that all was ultimately spirit, just as God was spirit. It followed that diseases were primarily spiritual rather than physical ailments, which should be treated with prayer rather than medicine. Eddy’s most prominent work, Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures, first appeared in 1875 and went through over 400 editions in the next 40 years. The text ends with an anthology of personal testimonies that describe miraculous recoveries and healings via the tenets of Christian Science.

Printed in 1925, Boston, Massachusetts. Acquired by Fourth Church of Christ, Scientist, Cleveland, Ohio.[1] Acquired by 1961 by the East Cleveland Public Library, Cleveland, Ohio.[2] Acquired by 2020 by Ted Steinbock, private collector, Louisville, Kentucky; Privately purchased in 2020 by Museum of the Bible, Washington, DC.

Notes: [1] The rear endpaper contains a presentation bookplate from Fourth Church of Christ, Scientist, Cleveland, Ohio, but the recipient line has been left blank. [2] Possibly acquired by East Cleveland Public Library by 1949. “East Cleveland Public Library” perfin stamps appear on the title page and epigraph page, along with the handwritten note, “Christian Science Church 9” and call numbers “289.5.301 cop. 12” and “61604.” Front pastedown contains a library card pocket from East Cleveland Public Library with the same call number, a card with seven checkout stamps, and a variety of dates, including “’49” and “1961.” It is evident the library possessed the book after Fourth Church of Christ, Scientist, as the church closed prior to 1980. It is not clear, however, if Fourth Church of Christ, Scientist, gifted the book directly to the library or if there were intermediate owners. Calls to East Cleveland Public Library to clarify the book’s history have not been returned.
