Robert Boyle, the well-known namesake of Boyle’s Law, was a towering figure in the history of chemistry whose scientific pursuits were closely related to his Christian faith. In his first publication, Some Motives and Incentives to the Love of God, Boyle contrasted mere human romance with love for God, or “seraphick” love (a term based upon the seraphim in Isaiah 6:2). Boyle would go on to publish other works on the Bible and the relationship between faith and reason, but this was his most popular work, appearing in nine editions during his life and six more after his death. This is the second-to-last edition, published in 1708.
Printed in 1708 by Jacob Tonson, London, England. Acquired in the 1900s by Francis Cyril Francis Parker, Skirwith, England.[1] Acquired by 2016 by Robert J. Hayhurst (1929–2016), Lancashire, England;[2] Purchased at auction in 2019 by an unknown buyer.[3] Acquired by 2019 by Wisdom Pedlars, bookseller, Loughborough, England; Purchased in 2019 by Ted Steinbock, private collector, Louisville, Kentucky; Privately purchased in 2020 by Museum of the Bible, Washington, DC.
Notes: [1] Frederick Cyril Francis Parker resided at Skirwith Abbey, the longtime residence of the Parker family in Cumbria, England, in the early twentieth century. He served in World War I and was a member of the British Astronomical Association. “F. C. F. Parker Skirwith Abbey” appears on the front flyleaf, and a stamp reading “F.C.F. Parker” appears on the front pastedown. [2] Robert James Hayhurst was a pharmacist and chemist in Lancashire, England. His bookplate appears on the front pastedown. [3] Morphets, The Hayhurst Library, Part I: The Elzevier and Other Early Printed Works, April 3, 2019, Lot 496. Robert James Hayhurst died in 2016, and his library was auctioned by Morphets of Harrogate in 2019. This book was sold to an unknown buyer.
