In 1917, the American Catholic hierarchy met to address the challenges of World War I. This meeting led to the formation of the National Catholic War Council, which published New Testaments like this one. Printed in 1918, this Douay New Testament also contains two prayers and a forward written to the soldiers and sailors of the United States by James Cardinal Gibbons, the Archbishop of Baltimore. This New Testament was given to Robert Lee Carter of the 7th Infantry based at Camp Lewis in Washington, who enlisted on January 19, 1921. After serving one year, he received an honorable discharge, in which it states Private Carter’s service was “honest and faithful.”

Published in 1918 by the National Catholic War Council, Washington, DC. Issued between 1921 and 1922 to Robert Lee Carter (d. 1977), Camp Lewis, Washington;[1] By widowhood in 1977 to Lelia Huckaby Carter (d. 1989); By descent in 1989 to Nora Carter Shephard, daughter of Lelia and Robert Lee Carter; Gifted in 2018 to Perry L. Vanoy, Louisiana; Donated in 2018 to Museum of the Bible, Washington, DC.

Notes: [1] Robert Lee Carter was an army private between January 18, 1921, and January 18, 1922. While this New Testament was issued to him during his army service, the exact date is unknown. He was honorably discharged on January 18, 1922.
