In the late nineteenth century, Andrew Dickson White’s (1832–1918) A History of the Warfare of Science with Theology in Christendom helped popularize the “conflict thesis”—the idea that science and Christianity are locked in a state of perpetual conflict. First published in 1896, this two-volume work was the culmination of his lifelong research, publications, and lectures on this supposed conflict. Modern historians have shown that White’s work was based on misleading, distorted, and even fabricated historical evidence, and today, most historians of science reject the conflict thesis. This two-volume set is bound in matching red cloth and contains various unsigned, handwritten quotes from the book on the endpapers and pastedowns.

Published in 1898 by D. Appleton and Company, New York, United States. Acquired by Vernon P. Whitley Jr.[1] Acquired in 1955 by Southeastern Book Agency.[2] Acquired before 2016 by Historic Locust Grove, Louisville, Kentucky;[3] Acquired in 2016 by Ted Steinbock, private collector, Louisville, Kentucky; Privately purchased in 2020 by Museum of the Bible, Washington, DC.
Notes: [1] Whitley’s name appears on the pastedown, but the inscription does not contain a date. [2] The front endpaper has a handwritten inscription on it that states, “Southeastern Book Agency, 2 vol., $5.00, 9-55.” The location of this shop is unclear, but research indicates other books were acquired by Southeastern Book Agency in the 1950s, leading to the conclusion that “9-55” represents the date of September 1955. [3] Dr. Steinbock purchased this set from a book sale at Historic Locust Grove in Louisville, Kentucky.
