Clara M. Cushman (d. 1928) was a missionary to Beijing, China, in the late 1800s. A member of the Woman’s Foreign Missionary Society of the Methodist Episcopal Church, Cushman served for a number of years in China. After her work in China, Cushman continued to serve the society at the New England Branch. The Woman’s Foreign Missionary Society began after a small group of women heard Dr. William Butler preach a missionary sermon on March 14, 1869, in Boston, Massachusetts. Throughout their years, they sent women missionaries to Africa, South America, and various other countries, including India, China, Japan, Korea, Italy, Mexico, Bulgaria, and the Philippines.
Created around 1875 by Allen & Rowell Portrait Photographers.[1] Acquired by 2010 by Gene Albert (Christian Heritage Museum), Hagerstown, Maryland; Privately purchased in 2010 by Green Collection, Oklahoma City, Oklahoma; Donated in 2017 to National Christian Foundation (later The Signatry), under the curatorial care of Museum of the Bible, Washington, DC.
Notes: [1] Edward Lowe Allen (ca. 1830–1914) and Frank Rowell (1832–1900) were photographers and partnered together at 25 Winter Street in Boston from around 1875 to 1900. The back of the photograph contains the photographer’s pictorial label. While the photograph is signed “Clara M. Cushman, Peking” on the front, it is unclear if the signatures is Cushman’s.
