This is the first edition of the New Testament, or Ke Kauoha Hou, in the Hawaiian language. American missionaries first arrived in what was then known as the Sandwich Islands in 1820. Working closely with indigenous Hawaiians and supported in part by the American Board of Commissioners for Foreign Missions and the American Bible Society, they quickly began work translating the Bible. After years of collaboration, they completed the entire New Testament in 1835, followed by the Old Testament in 1838. This copy remains in its original binding and was owned by Jacob Collamer, US senator from Vermont, who inscribed the title page.
Printed in 1835 by Na na misionari i pai, Oahu, Hawaii. Acquired in 1836 by Jacob Collamer, Vermont, United States.[1] Acquired by 2010 by Lou Weinstein, Beverly Hills, California; Privately purchased in 2010 by Green Collection; Donated in 2016 to National Christian Foundation (later The Signatry), under the curatorial care of Museum of the Bible, Washington, DC.
Notes: [1] An inscription on the front flyleaf, dated 1836 near the initials D. B. L., notes Jacob Collamer’s ownership. The front pastedown also features a note by an unknown dealer that states “1st bound book and first Bible published in Hawaii.”
