On January 20, 1953, Dwight D. Eisenhower took the presidential oath of office. Minutes later, President Eisenhower presented his inaugural address, but before he did, he asked the people if they would permit him to say a private prayer. He prayed “that our concern shall be for all the people, regardless of station, race, or calling. May cooperation be permitted and be the mutual aim of those whom under the concept of our Constitution, hold to differing political beliefs—so that all may work for the good of our beloved country and for Thy glory.” This document is an artistically hand-printed copy of the prayer he shared with the nation that day. President Eisenhower signed and gifted this copy to Mrs. Deloris Moaney in 1953.

Created in 1953. Acquired in 1953 by President Dwight D. Eisenhower; Gifted in 1953 to Mrs. Deloris Moaney.[1] Acquired before 2010 by Christian Heritage Museum, Hagerstown, Maryland; Privately purchased in 2010 by Green Collection, Oklahoma City, Oklahoma; Donated in 2019 to The Signatry, under the curatorial care of Museum of the Bible, Washington, DC.

Notes: [1] Mrs. Deloris Moaney was the wife of Master Sergeant John Moaney, who served under Eisenhower in World War II. After the war, Deloris and John Moaney worked together for the Eisenhower’s throughout their years at Columbia University, the White House, and Gettysburg. After John’s death in 1978, many items that Eisenhower had given the Moaneys were given from Deloris to an individual who then sold them on eBay. This is believed to be how Christian Heritage Museum acquired it.
