This comic book shares authentic stories of military chaplains during World War II. One story tells of Rabbi Harold Gordon, who, upon enlistment as a chaplain for the North Atlantic Division, Air Transport Command, was loaned a Torah scroll by Beth Israel Synagogue in Bangor, Maine. This Torah scroll became known as the “Flying Torah” and was flown over 75,000 miles to Air Transport Command units worldwide. Another story tells of four chaplains who sacrificed their lives when an Army transport ship, the U.S.A.T Dorchester, sunk in 1943. Printed in the book is a word of appreciation to all chaplains, “wherever you are . . . our sincere gratitude for your courage, [and] your selfless devotion to duty.”
