This Bible was given to Peirce Crosby by his grandmother when he first went into the navy as a Midshipman in 1838. Crosby served in the United States Navy during the Mexican–American War and the American Civil War. At his retirement from the navy in 1884, he had achieved the rank of rear admiral and went on to serve as the assistant secretary of state. In 1887, the Bible was rebound, and Rear Admiral Crosby wrote a note on the pastedown.
