This hand-colored lithograph was once part of a two-volume set titled, Biblical Pictures of the Old Testament and Biblical Pictures of the New Testament, published by John Weik & Co., Publisher & Importer, Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. Each lithograph is numbered and includes the title and biblical reference in French, German, and English. This print is marked with the Roman numeral “XXI.” The biblical reference is to Matthew 26:36–46. It depicts Jesus kneeling in the garden of Gethsemane. Rays of light shine toward him from the left as he prays. To the right, the disciples lie sleeping as a group of soldiers approaches with torches in their hands. The matte frame (a later addition) includes a printed reference to Matthew 26:44 in the King James Version.
Originally published in 1851 in two bound volumes by John Weik & Co., Publisher & Importer, Philadelphia, Pennsylvania.[1] Acquired by 2010 by Gene Albert (Christian Heritage Museum), Hagerstown, Maryland; Purchased in 2010 by Green Collection, Oklahoma City, Oklahoma, under the curatorial care of Museum of the Bible, Washington, DC.
