This design is a reimagining of an 1801 print by John James Barralet, substituting Lincoln’s likeness for Washington’s. It became a popular commemorative piece following Lincoln’s assassination and presented the president as saint-like to further the cause of American patriotism and unification. The print includes details from Washington’s era, such as the badges of the Society of Cincinnati and Freemasons, as well as a shield with only 15 stars, rather than the 35 stars of Lincoln’s Union.

Printed in 1865. Acquired by 2010 by Christian Heritage Museum, Hagerstown, Maryland; Privately purchased in 2010 by Green Collection, Oklahoma City, Oklahoma, under the curatorial care of Museum of the Bible, Washington, DC.
