This hand-colored lithograph was once part of a two-volume set titled, Biblical Pictures of the Old Testament and Biblical Pictures of the New Testament, published by John Weik & Co., Publisher & Importer, Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. Each lithograph is numbered and includes the title and biblical reference in French, German, and English. This print is marked with the Roman numeral “XXII.” The biblical reference is to Matthew 27:1–14. It depicts Jesus, bound and dressed in white, standing before the Sanhedrin. Centurions stand guard on the right as the Sanhedrin gather on the left. The matte frame (a later addition) includes a printed reference to Matthew 27:2 in the King James Version.
Originally published in 1851 in two bound volumes by John Weik & Co., Publisher & Importer, Philadelphia, Pennsylvania.[1] Acquired by 2010 by Gene Albert (Christian Heritage Museum), Hagerstown, Maryland; Purchased in 2010 by Green Collection, Oklahoma City, Oklahoma, under the curatorial care of Museum of the Bible, Washington, DC.
Notes: [1] The date is established from a separate set published by Weik that includes an inscription from B. Hummel on plate XXIV in Biblical Pictures of the Old Testament.
