This hand-colored lithograph was once part of a two-volume set titled, Biblical Pictures of the Old Testament and Biblical Pictures of the New Testament, published by John Weik & Co., Publisher & Importer, Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. Each lithograph is numbered and includes the title and biblical reference in French, German, and English. This print is marked with the Roman numeral “XXIV.” The biblical reference is to Luke 23:26–27. It depicts Jesus kneeling on the ground, carrying the cross on his shoulder. He is dressed in white with a crown of thorns on his head. A centurion raises one hand toward a hill, where two other crosses stand, as Simon of Cyrene takes the cross from Jesus. Nearby, women kneel with their hands raised and a crowd follows. The matte frame (a later addition) includes a printed reference to Luke 23:26 in the King James Version.
