This hand-colored lithograph was once part of a two-volume set titled, Biblical Pictures of the Old Testament and Biblical Pictures of the New Testament, published by John Weik & Co., Publisher & Importer, Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. Each lithograph is numbered and includes the title and biblical reference in French, German, and English. This print is marked with the Roman numeral “XXIX.” The biblical reference is to Acts 7:57–59. It depicts Stephen kneeling on the ground with his arms and head raised. Four men with large rocks in their hands, raised and ready to throw, surround him, Stephen. Tradition refers to this event as “the Stoning of Stephen.” The matte frame (a later addition) includes a printed reference to Acts 7:59 in the King James Version.
