Written by C. S. Lewis, The Lion, The Witch and the Wardrobe was the first published book in The Chronicles of Narnia series. Recent editions of the series are set in chronological order, placing The Lion, The Witch and the Wardrobe as volume two. It follows the Pevensie children, who visit the magical land of Narnia through a wardrobe. In Narnia, Aslan—a talking lion and the king of beasts—represents Jesus. The story tells of how Aslan sacrificed himself to save one of the children. Aslan’s innocence, however, returns him to life, a reference to Jesus’s death and resurrection. This first edition, first impression edition was signed by the illustrator of the series, Pauline Baynes (1922–2008), shortly before her death.

Printed in 1950 by Geoffrey Bles, London. Acquired by Dr. Edwin Brown (1926–2015);[1] Purchased after 2013 by Andrew Stimer, Camarillo, California;[2] Privately purchased in 2014 by Green Collection, Oklahoma City, Oklahoma; Donated in 2015 to National Christian Foundation (later The Signatry), under the curatorial care of Museum of the Bible, Washington, DC.

Notes: [1] Information provided by Stimer documents Dr. Brown’s recollection that “Pauline Baynes signed this book for me at our last visit, shortly before she passed away. Surprisingly, she told me that she had signed very few of the Narnia first editions.” [2] Information from Stimer states he purchased this work from Dr. Edwin Brown, an avid reader and collector of Lewis’s works. Brown sold the majority of his collection to a library in 2013, and Stimer purchased the remaining Lewis material afterward.
