This first edition of the New Testament in Hula was translated by L. M. T. Short and Ila Tiana, missionaries who worked for years after World War II to codify and translate the Bible. Today, there are a little over 3,000 speakers of the Hula language in the central region of Papua New Guinea.
Printed in 1954 in Sydney, Australia. Acquired by the Massachusetts Bible Society, Boston, Massachusetts.[1] Acquired by an unknown book dealer; Purchased before 2016 by Dr. Andrew Stimer, private collector, Camarillo, California; Purchased in 2016 by Green Collection, Oklahoma City, Oklahoma; Donated in 2017 to National Christian Foundation (later The Signatry) under the curatorial care of Museum of the Bible, Washington, DC.
Notes: [1] A gold sticker on the title page states, “Massachusetts Bible Society, 41 Bromfield St. Boston.” The Massachusetts Bible Society provided some context to their ownership of this New Testament, stating that it is highly likely that the Bible was purchased by the Bible Society in the early 1950s to give as a gift to either an individual or another organization who expressed a need for it. They have long been in the habit of applying stickers to Bibles they give away (email from Massachusetts Bible Society to Museum of the Bible, June 13, 2019).
