The Saur Bible was printed in 1743 by Christoph Saur and was the first Bible printed in a European language in North America. Saur was a German-born printer in Germantown, Pennsylvania. Hoping to serve the area’s growing German-speaking population, he printed his Bible using Martin Luther’s translation and produced approximately 1,200 copies. Saur’s son, Christoph Saur Jr., would print a second edition in 1763, which was the first Bible printed on American-made paper, and a third edition in 1776, which was the first Bible printed using American-made type. This copy is a first edition.
