This dress is from Gaultier’s 1998 Ready-to-Wear spring/summer collection, inspired by Mexican artist Frida Kahlo. The print is a pastiche of images from biblical art, including what appears to be the head of a “Man of Sorrows”—Jesus in mourning. The biblical imagery in this collection complements Kahlo’s expressions of pain and the accompanying crowns of thorns worn by the models in her 1940 “Self-Portrait with Thorn Necklace.”
