This edition of the New Testament is written in American Sign Language (ASL) using SignWriting, a writing system developed in the 1970s by Valerie Sutton that uses visual symbols to express the different handshapes, movements, and facial expressions typically found in ASL. Nancy Romero, a colleague of Sutton, began translating the New Testament into SignWriting in 2004, basing her work on the New Living Translation. She completed all 27 books of the Protestant New Testament in 2014, publishing the work in eight volumes. This translation, along with the SignWriting system, is used around the world today.
