This is an early London edition of Harriet Beecher Stowe’s novel Uncle Tom’s Cabin, with illustrations by English artist George Cruikshank. Originally published as a series of installments in the American abolitionist newspaper The National Era, the book sold more than one million copies in the United States and Europe during its first year in print. Stowe drew upon biblical themes and imagery throughout her narrative to condemn slavery as a moral atrocity. The novel would eventually go through dozens of editions in multiple languages. This copy is bound in one volume with green cloth and includes 27 of Cruikshank’s images.
