This is one of the first London editions of Harriet Beecher Stowe’s novel Uncle Tom’s Cabin. Originally published as a series of installments in the American abolitionist newspaper The National Era, the book sold more than one million copies in the United States and Europe during its first year in print. Stowe drew upon biblical themes and imagery throughout her narrative to condemn slavery as a moral atrocity. The novel would eventually go through dozens of editions in multiple languages. This copy is published in one volume with embossed gray cloth.
