This August 1860 edition of The Atlantic Monthly contains Asa Gray’s review of Charles Darwin’s On the Origin of Species. Asa Gray was a devout Presbyterian and botany professor at Harvard University. When Darwin published his evolutionary theory in On the Origin of Species, Gray enthusiastically endorsed the work. Gray argued that evolution was not only scientifically credible but also compatible with the Christian faith. Many of his subsequent essays on the harmony between Christianity and evolution were collected in a volume titled Darwiniana.
