This popular songbook was compiled by composers Phillip Paul Bliss (1838–1876) and Ira David Sankey (1840–1908). Both Bliss and Sankey were traveling, singing evangelists, Sankey being best known for his collaborations with the itinerate preacher Dwight L. Moody. Bliss and Sankey published their first volume of Gospel Hymns in 1874, to much acclaim. In 1876, they released this second volume, which includes the first printing of “It Is Well with My Soul” written by Horatio Spafford (1828–1888) and composed by Bliss. Sadly, Bliss died this same year at the age of 38.
