This bust of George Washington is based on a terracotta bust by William Rush, a neoclassical artist from Philadelphia considered to be the first major American sculptor. He took up sculpture after serving as an officer in the militia during the Revolutionary War, later founding the Pennsylvania Academy of Fine Arts with Charles Wilson Peale. His works were often deeply undercut, creating high contrast and strong shadows.

Created in 1817, likely by William Rush. Acquired by 2019 by Ted Steinbock, private collector, Louisville, Kentucky; Privately purchased in 2020 by Museum of the Bible, Washington, DC.
