Robert Boyle, the well-known namesake of Boyle’s law, was a towering figure in the history of chemistry whose scientific pursuits were closely related to his Christian faith. In Some Considerations Touching the Style of the Holy Scriptures, Boyle outlined his convictions about the language and veracity of the Bible. He expressed a sensitivity to the context and original intent of the words of scripture and discussed the difficulties and pitfalls of the translation process. This is a second-edition copy published in 1663.

Printed in 1663 by Henry Herringman, London, England. Notes: [1] A Balliol College bookplate with college arms and handwritten call numbers “475.a.6,” “L.23.6,” and “A15-12” appears on the front pastedown. [2] A University of Chicago Library bookplate appears on the front pastedown. [3] It has been stamped, “This book is no longer the property of the University of Chicago Library,” along with the initials “PL” and a deaccession date of “8/20/84.” According to Sem Sutter, formerly of the University of Chicago Library, “PL” refers to Patrick Lally, a graduate student in the Department of History who assisted with the merger of the University of Chicago Library and the John Crerar Library. A “University of Chicago Libraries” perfin stamp also appears on the title page. [4] Christie’s, University of Chicago Rare Science Duplicates, Part II, March 30, 1995, Lot 318. This auction contained a larger number of duplicate items held by the University of Chicago Library after its merger with the John Crerar Library.
