This is the second edition of the ABC Buchstabir und Lesebuch published by JF Funk in 1871. The book is based on Benjamin Eby’s ABC Buchstabir und Lesebuch, first published in 1836 in Berlin (now Kitchener), Ontario. Before the creation of Mennonite Sunday-school literature, the American Mennonite Sunday schools used a combination of English and German material from a range of denominational publishing houses. The Sunday schools often served as a place to teach children the German language. Funk published these ABC books for use in these schools.
Printed in 1871 by John Fretz Funk, Elkhart, Indiana.[1] Acquired in 2003 by Gene Albert (Christian Heritage Museum), Hagerstown, Maryland; Acquired in 2010 by Green Collection, Oklahoma City, Oklahoma, under the curatorial care of Museum of the Bible, Washington, DC.
Notes: [1] John Fretz Funk was one of the main leaders of the Mennonite Church in the 19th century. He owned a publishing house in Elkhart, Indiana, where he published this German spelling and reading book.
