This letter was written on June 10, 1835, by President Andrew Jackson (1767–1845) to Eben Ritchie Dorr, United States consular in Buenos Aires, Argentina. President Jackson wrote to recommend Reverend Fountain E. Pitts. Pitts carried this letter and accompanying envelope with no postal markings with him to Buenos Aires, where he traveled to scout missionary opportunities for the Methodist Church. President Jackson’s recommendation to Dorr stated, “I know you will take pleasure in befriending whatever service is devoted to the true interest of religion and the cause of humanity.” In September 1835, Dorr wrote to the Buenos Aires minister of foreign affairs requesting Pitts be allowed to exercise his functions as a clergyman and mentioned this recommendation letter from President Jackson.
