Howard Thurman (1899–1981) was a Methodist clergyman and educator who wrote over 20 books, including his most famous work, Jesus and the Disinherited. This book and its examination of Jesus’s nonviolent responses to oppression deeply influenced civil rights leaders, including Martin Luther King Jr., who studied it during the Montgomery bus boycott. This letter is written to Timothy Fulton, the son of his friend Leonard Fulton. In it, Thurman suggests steps toward maturity in the Christian life and writes, “Despite what the world may seem to be or despite what the world is today . . . it is reassuring to know that there are men and women . . . dreaming and working to make the world a good place for you and all other children everywhere.” Thurman ends his letter with a postscript to Timothy’s father.
