Printed in 1942 for Jewish soldiers serving in the US Army, this pocket-size Bible contains selections from the Hebrew Bible in the 1917 Jewish Publication Society translation. The selections were made by the Jewish Welfare Board, an organization that looked after the welfare of Jewish soldiers and supported Jewish chaplains in the US Armed Services. It opens with a letter from Franklin D. Roosevelt commending the reading of the Bible to soldiers “as an aid in attaining the highest aspirations of the human soul.” This Bible was owned by Rabbi George Lieberman.
Printed in 1942 by the United States Government Printing Office, Washington, DC. Acquired before 1984 by Rabbi George Lieberman, Southampton, New York;[1] By descent in 1984 to Deborah Lieberman, Baltimore, Maryland; Donated in 2021 to Museum of the Bible, Washington, DC.
Notes: [1] Lieberman was a prominent author and rabbi from Long Island who was involved with the struggle for Soviet Jewry.
