This passport belonged to Philip James Elliot (1927–1956), who was a Christian missionary to the Waodäni people of Ecuador in the 1950s with his wife, Elisabeth Elliot (1926–2015). Jim left the United States for Ecuador in 1951. He was killed in 1956 by a Waodäni hunting party as he and four other missionaries were attempting to make friendly contact. His wife, Elisabeth, whom he married in 1953, chose to stay and live with the tribe after Jim’s death. She returned to the United States in 1963.
