It was published in the German Democratic Republic shortly after the state-sponsored ceremony celebrating the 500th anniversary of Luther’s birth. The aim of this new translation was to address how government-sponsored anti-Luther sentiment led to the 1975 edition deviating too much from Luther’s original translation.
