Hannah More (1745–1833) was an English poet, playwright, religious writer, social reformer, and anti-slavery activist. More wrote her first play in 1762 and continued to write poetry, plays, and tracts, which in her later years became more evangelical. This small manuscript features a partial quote from William Cowper’s, The Task (Cowper)/Book V—The Winter Morning Walk. Cowper was an English poet and hymnist whose works were known to More. Copied in More’s hand, the partial quote reads, “Know there is yet a liberty unsung, By Poets and by Senators unpressed, ’Tis liberty of Heart.” More signed and dated the document February 1828.
