This King James New Testament was printed in gold on enameled paper by Thomas De La Rue and his associates for Adolphus Richter, a publisher and foreign bookseller in London. De La Rue helped pioneer this enameling technique, which he used to print other goods ranging from playing cards to banknotes. Only a small number of these New Testaments were printed in 1834 and 1836, which included notes by Matthew Henry. Few survive today. Each copy weighs nearly 14 pounds due to the enameled paper. This 1836 copy is in near-perfect condition and is bound in contemporary red morocco leather with gilded edges.
