This hand-colored lithograph was once part of a two-volume set titled, Biblical Pictures of the Old Testament and Biblical Pictures of the New Testament, published by John Weik & Co., Publisher & Importer, Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. Each lithograph is numbered and includes the title and biblical reference in French, German, and English. This print is marked with the Roman numeral “XVI.” The biblical reference is to Luke 15:11–24. It depicts an older, bearded man dressed in orange and yellow robes bending down to touch the head of his son, who kneels at his feet. The son is dressed in a torn garment, and he holds his hands in a prayerful position with his head bowed toward his father. Looking on are two servants ready to bring the son a new robe. The matte frame (a later addition) includes a printed reference to Luke 15:21 in the King James Version.
