Miles Coverdale was an instrumental figure in the production of an English translation of the Bible. The Coverdale Bible, printed in 1535, was the first complete English Bible. This New Testament is a second edition of Coverdale’s diglot in Latin and English. The Latin corresponds to Jerome’s translation, the Latin Vulgate, while the English is a translation of the Latin, rather than a reprint of the 1535 text. The Latin is printed in roman type and the English in black-letter. The first few pages of this copy are missing, but it would have included a dedication to King Henry VIII, which concludes with the signature of Miles Coverdale.
Printed in 1538 by James Nicolson, London, England. Acquired by Throp Book Store; Purchased on April 6, 16[…] by William Case;[1] Gifted in 1634 to David Burcher by William Case. Acquired before 2005 by Christopher Henry Beaumont Pease, 2nd Baron Wardington, England.[2] Acquired before 2011 by David C. Lachman, Philadelphia, Pennsylvania; Privately purchased in 2011 by Green Collection, Oklahoma City, Oklahoma; Donated in 2014 to Museum of the Bible, Washington, DC.[3]
[1] William Case was the sub-dean of St. Oswald’s Church in Chester, Cheshire, England. He died October 6, 1634, according to his monument in St. Mary’s Chapel. A note recording the date he purchased the Bible is incomplete, and the last two digits of the year are cut off. [2] A bookplate belonging to Pease is on the back pastedown. Pease died in 2005. [3] The initials “W T” are embossed on the front and back covers of a modern rebinding, though it is unclear to whom the initials refer.
