This print by Henry Sadd, based on the painting by Tompkins Harrison Matteson (American, 1813–1884), was very popular at the time of production. It depicts Reverend Jacob Duché leading members of Congress in the opening prayer of the First Continental Congress on September 7, 1774, at Carpenter’s Hall in Philadelphia. John Adams, in a letter to his wife, Abigail, noted the profound effect of the prayer and the reading of Psalm 35 on the attendees, believing it to have been divinely orchestrated.
Printed in 1848 by Neale & Pate, New York, New York. Acquired by 2010 by Christian Heritage Museum, Hagerstown, Maryland; Privately purchased in 2010 by the Green Collection, Oklahoma City, Oklahoma, under the curatorial care of Museum of the Bible, Washington, DC.
