This small painting was likely created for reproduction as a postcard. A larger painting of the subject exists, and a similar version was printed as an illustration for Richard Wilson’s 1911 book, Lives of Great Men Told by Great Men. It shows the Pilgrims engaged in prayer as they watch their ship, the Mayflower, sail away from the shores of America.

Created in the late nineteenth century by Alfred Walter Bayes. [1] Acquired by 2010 by Christian Heritage Museum, Hagerstown, Maryland; Privately purchased in 2010 by the Green Collection, Oklahoma City, Oklahoma, under the curatorial care of Museum of the Bible, Washington, DC.

Notes: [1] There are records online of this image on postcards that required 1 cent postage. In 1873, a special rate of 1 cent postage for postcards was introduced. Prior to 1873, all U.S. mail was 3 cents. Thus, the postcard prints of this image were likely after 1873, but the painting may have been created prior to 1873.
