Two versions of the New Testament by the prolific printer Robert Estienne, known as Robertus Stephanus in Latin, show some of the earliest steps in what has become the field of textual criticism. In this beautiful edition from around 1550, known as the Editio Regia (the “Regal Edition”), a critical apparatus that compares differences between Greek manuscripts appears for the first time.
