This Greek capital once topped a column within a Byzantine church. The architectural style of the column is typical of the period and differs from the preceding Greco-Roman architectural style. There are carved monograms on two sides of the capital. The first reads “for the fulfillment of the prayer [of],” and the second gives the name of the subject of the prayer, “Isidoros.” This person likely gave money to support the construction of the church, and the inscription commemorates their contribution.
Created in AD 500s. Acquired in the 1960s by Dr. Theodoros Sarmas, London. Acquired by Ariadne Galleries, London; Purchased in 2017 by Museum of the Bible, Washington, DC.
