In the heart of the American Civil War, the New York Herald issue from January 5, 1863, recalls an anti-Semitic order given by Gen. Ulysses S. Grant in December 1862. “General Order No. 11” demanded that all Jews leave General Grant’s military district, which spanned areas of Kentucky, Mississippi, and Tennessee. Jewish leaders immediately appealed to President Abraham Lincoln, who “instructed General Halleck to countermand the order imperatively.” The newspaper also records numerous battles in the Civil War and records several church sermons supporting the Emancipation Proclamation, which took effect four days before, on January 1, 1863.
