J. B. T. Marsh’s book recounts the formation and early travels of the Fisk Jubilee Singers, drawing from Rev. Gustavus D. Pike’s earlier histories. Named after the year of the Jubilee in Leviticus 25, the Jubilee Singers were a student ensemble formed in 1871 to help raise money for Fisk University, which had been founded only in 1866 with the aid of the American Missionary Association. The group achieved worldwide fame, challenging stereotypes on their tours of both the United States and Europe. This work shares personal stories of members during these early tours and includes some of their most popular songs. The group continues to perform 150 years later, winning many awards, including a Grammy and a National Medal of Arts.

Printed in 1880 by the Riverside Press, Cambridge, Massachusetts. Acquired by 2019 by Ted Steinbock, private collector, Louisville, Kentucky; Privately purchased in 2020 by Museum of the Bible, Washington, DC.
