John Wesley (1703–1791) was an English preacher and revivalist who founded the first Methodist Society in 1739. Although Wesley and his brother Charles encountered significant resistance due to their embrace of certain unorthodox theological positions, such as perfectionism, Methodism eventually expanded into an international movement with millions of adherents. Wesley was also keenly interested in science and medicine. In his 1744 Primitive Physic, Wesley compiled simple remedies for a wide variety of conditions, ranging from fever to baldness. It became a wildly popular text and passed through many editions and revisions. This is the 23rd edition, printed in 1791. It is bound with Samuel-Auguste Tissot’s Advices with Respect to Health.

Printed in 1791 at New-Chapel, City Road, London, England. Acquired by 2020 by Ted Steinbock, private collector, Louisville, Kentucky;[1] Privately purchased in 2020 by Museum of the Bible, Washington, DC.

Notes: [1] Handwritten documentation from Ted Steinbock indicates this book was purchased from antiquarian bookseller David Lachman in 2002, but it has not been possible to verify this information.
