John Wesley (1703–1791) was an English preacher and revivalist who founded the first Methodist Society in 1739. Although Wesley and his brother Charles encountered significant resistance due to their embrace of certain unorthodox theological positions, such as perfectionism, Methodism eventually expanded into an international movement with millions of adherents. Wesley was also keenly interested in science and medicine. In his 1744 Primitive Physic, Wesley compiled simple remedies for a wide variety of conditions, ranging from fever to baldness. It became a wildly popular text and passed through many editions and revisions. In this copy of the 1792 edition, two former readers exchanged humorous notes in the margins, writing, “Steal not this book” and “I’ll have your book.” It is bound with Samuel-Auguste Tissot’s Advices with Respect to Health.
