This nineteenth-century book is an encyclopedia of sorts, showing the Bible’s transmission history through languages across the world—more than 120 languages and dialects in total. It includes ethnographic maps showing the geographic location of the languages, tables grouping languages according to various classifications, facsimile specimens, and alphabets. It also includes the Lord’s Prayer in different scripts.
Printed in 1860 by Samuel Bagster and Sons, London, England. Acquired by the early 1990s by the North Devon Athenaeum, Barnstaple, England;[1] Acquired in the early 1990s by Bates & Hindmarch Antiquarian Books, Cheltenham, England;[2][3] Purchased in 2016 by Dr. Ted Steinbock, private collector, Louisville, Kentucky; Privately purchased in 2020 by Museum of the Bible, Washington, DC.
Notes: [1] Jeffery Bates advised that the North Devon Athenaeum in Barnstaple was disposing of old books from its private library. The institution is now part of the local library, and they have re-housed the books. Bates kept it for years as a reference work, but when he moved from a house with a large, 60 ft. library, he had to reduce his reference library. The North Devon Athenaeum has no records of the book. [2] Inscription on the recto side of the second fly leaf reads “Lot 15 last proof of […] 1860.” [3] Other miscellaneous inscriptions appear in the book.
