Billy Graham’s The Secret of Happiness explores the Beatitudes in Matthew and Luke to argue that true joy and satisfaction can only be found through God. Graham was an American revivalist who embraced mass media to reinvent the American revival tradition for the post-World War II era, preaching to more people than anyone else in history—about 215 million people in nearly 100 countries and territories. Whether in radio, television, print, or in person, Graham’s message drew heavily from the Bible. Graham published The Secret of Happiness in 1955 to address what he and many other Christians felt to be a spiritual decline in America, due in part to consumerism and secularism.

Published in 1955 by Doubleday & Company, New York City, New York. Acquired by 2019 by Ted Steinbock, private collector, Louisville, Kentucky; Privately purchased in 2020 by Museum of the Bible, Washington, DC.
